Degree Stops Midway: Why Indian Students Return Before Completing Overseas
Higher Education
A Case-Cum-Empirical Study of Financial,
Academic, Psychological, Family and Institutional Determinants

International student mobility has become an important
component of India's higher-education landscape. Indian students are increasingly traveling overseas to seek better academic environments, research facilities, employment opportunities, global exposure, and professional networks. However,
international mobility does not always result in successful course completion.
Some students return to India before completing their programmes because of
financial pressure, inadequate part-time employment, academic mismatch,
psychological stress, family emergencies, visa difficulties, cultural
adjustment problems and weak institutional support.
This case-cum-research paper investigates the
determinants of mid-course return among Indian students pursuing higher
education abroad. The paper develops its conceptual framework from thirteen
factors identified in the underlying case material: financial pressure,
inadequate financial planning, difficulty obtaining part-time employment,
academic mismatch, incorrect course selection, language barriers, mental-health
and loneliness issues, cultural adjustment, health and family emergencies,
visa/immigration difficulties, weak institutional support, better opportunities
in India and family/social responsibilities. The original material
appropriately cautions that the frequently reported 81% figure refers
to intention to return after education, not actual mid-course return.
For empirical illustration, a simulated survey dataset
of 300 Indian international students is analysed using descriptive statistics,
reliability analysis, Pearson correlation, multiple regression and chi-square
analysis. The illustrative regression model indicates that financial pressure,
perceived opportunities in India, psychological stress, part-time employment
difficulty, inadequate institutional support and family responsibilities are
among the strongest predictors of mid-course return pressure. The model
explains approximately 63.2% of the variance in the dependent variable. These
findings are illustrative and should not be interpreted as evidence from an
actual field survey.
The paper argues that mid-course return should not
automatically be interpreted as academic failure or brain drain. Return may
represent forced return, planned return or strategic return. A policy shift
from merely increasing outbound student mobility towards creating brain
circulation, international partnerships and credible reintegration
opportunities is therefore required.

Introduction
International higher education has become an important
dimension of India's educational and economic transformation. Indian students
increasingly select universities in countries such as the United Kingdom,
Canada, the United States, Australia and other European destinations. Overseas
education is often associated with advanced teaching methods, research
infrastructure, international exposure, professional networks and improved
employment prospects.
However, the decision to study abroad is not necessarily
equivalent to successful completion of an overseas programme.
A student may enter a foreign university with
considerable expectations but subsequently encounter unexpected tuition and
living expenses, difficulties in obtaining employment, academic pressure,
loneliness, language barriers, family emergencies or immigration restrictions.
The uploaded case material identifies thirteen possible causes of mid-course
return and emphasises that such decisions generally involve multiple
overlapping factors rather than a single cause.
A particularly important issue is the interpretation of
the widely reported 81% figure. The Oxford International
survey reported in 2026 indicates that 81% of surveyed Indian students intended
to return to India after completing their education. It does not
establish that 81% of Indian students return midway through their courses.
This distinction creates an important research question:
Why do some Indian students return before
completing an overseas programme when many students initially intend to study
abroad and subsequently return only after graduation?
The difference between intended post-study
return and actual mid-course return has received
considerably less attention in public discussion.
This study therefore focuses specifically on mid-course
return.
2. Background of the Case
The basic case is that of an Indian student who leaves
India after investing substantial financial, emotional and social resources in
overseas education.
The student may initially perceive the foreign
university as offering:

research infrastructure;

exposure;
- better
employment prospects;
- professional
networks;

recognition;
- modern
teaching methods; and
- improved
career mobility.
After arrival, however, the actual experience may differ
from expectations.
The student may face:

high accommodation costs;
- difficulty
obtaining part-time employment;
- academic
workload greater than anticipated;
- problems
with academic writing;
- loneliness
and homesickness;
- cultural
adjustment difficulties;
- health
problems;
- family
emergencies in India;
- visa
restrictions;
- inadequate
university support;
- inappropriate
course selection;
- inability
to manage debt or tuition expenses; and
- a new
employment or entrepreneurial opportunity in India.
The case material specifically emphasises that
mid-course return is normally a combination of factors rather
than the consequence of one isolated problem.
Literature
Review
The literature can be organized
around six major themes relevant to your study: international student
mobility, academic adjustment, financial pressure, psychological and
sociocultural adjustment, institutional support, and return/brain circulation.
- International student mobility. Luo (2023) shows that international student mobility
has expanded into a multidisciplinary research field encompassing student
decision-making, higher-education institutions, business and labour-market
outcomes. The review also identifies the need to study different forms of
mobility rather than treating international students as a homogeneous
group.
- Indian students' mobility decisions. Gopinath (2015) argues that Indian students' overseas
mobility involves multiple transitions and tensions between controlled and
emergent mobility. This supports examining the student's decision not
merely as a one-time choice to leave India but as a process that can
change after arrival in the host country.
- Academic and sociocultural adjustment. Research consistently indicates that academic
adjustment and social adaptation are important for international students.
Westwood and Barker (1990), for example, found that peer-pairing with
host-national students was associated with higher achievement and lower
dropout. More recent evidence from a 2026 meta-analysis of 13 studies
involving 6,233 international students found a significant positive
association between social support and academic adjustment (r = .365, p
< .001).
- Psychological stress and loneliness. Brunsting et al. (2018) reviewed international-student
adjustment research and identified social support, loneliness, depression,
anxiety, language proficiency, acculturation and social interaction as
important areas of investigation. A meta-analysis by Bender et al. (2019),
synthesizing 257 effects from 76 studies, found a significant positive
relationship between social support and psychological adjustment (r =
.20). More recent systematic reviews similarly identify financial
pressure, academic pressure, language barriers, acculturative stress,
social support and visa-related stress as interconnected influences on
international students' mental well-being.
- Financial and academic pressures. The wider student-retention literature indicates that
financial circumstances can affect persistence. St. John, Paulsen, and
Starkey (1996) found that tuition, housing and other living costs can have
direct effects on persistence decisions. Recent dropout research further
suggests that financial pressure may interact with employment demands,
reduced study time, academic disengagement and psychological strain rather
than operating as an isolated factor.
- Institutional and social support. Shu et al. (2020), studying 276 international
students, found that support from friends and institutions was
particularly related to cross-cultural adjustment, while diverse social
networks and relationships with host nationals also mattered. This
suggests that universities can potentially reduce avoidable withdrawal
through academic advising, peer networks, counselling and stronger
international-student services.
- Return migration and brain circulation. The conventional brain-drain perspective treats
international migration primarily as a loss of human capital. However,
research on Indian returnees suggests that return can facilitate
knowledge, managerial expertise, technology, entrepreneurship and institutional
know-how. Zagade and Desai (2017) describe this movement from brain drain
towards brain circulation among Indian returnee professionals. Recent
Indian policy analysis similarly argues for moving from a simple
"loss" perspective towards strategies that retain, circulate,
leverage and reintegrate internationally mobile talent.
- From return intention to actual return. This distinction is particularly important for the
present study. The recently reported Oxford International survey found
that 81% of Indian students surveyed intended to return to India after
completing their education. This measures post-study intention,
not mid-course withdrawal or actual return. Consequently, there is a
research opportunity to investigate what happens between initial enrolment
and completion, particularly when financial, academic, psychological,
family and institutional pressures accumulate.
3. Research Problem
The popular narrative surrounding Indian students
studying abroad usually focuses on:

Less attention is given to students who do not
complete their overseas programme.
The research problem may therefore be stated as:
What combination of financial, academic,
psychological, family, immigration and institutional factors contributes to
Indian students returning to India before completing overseas higher-education
programmes?
4. Research Gap
Three gaps are identified.
4.1 Conceptual gap
Student mobility is frequently discussed as either brain
drain or successful international education. Mid-course return occupies an
intermediate position and requires separate analysis.
4.2 Empirical gap
The 81% figure relates to intention to return
after completing education, whereas intention should not be confused
with actual mid-course withdrawal.
4.3 Policy gap
Existing discussion often concentrates on attracting
international students and reducing brain drain. Less attention is given to
preventing avoidable mid-course withdrawal and creating mechanisms through
which returnees can continue education, transfer credits, obtain employment or
participate in India's research ecosystem.

9. Research Methodology
9.1 Research design
The study adopts a case-cum-empirical research
design.
The qualitative component develops the case and
theoretical framework, while the quantitative component illustrates how the
determinants can be tested statistically.
9.2 Population
The target population is:
Indian students who have studied or are studying in
overseas higher-education institutions and who have experienced, considered, or
observed the possibility of returning before completing their programme.
9.3 Sample size
For the present manuscript, a simulated sample
of 300 respondents is used for statistical illustration.
Important publication note: The 300
observations are illustrative/simulated and must not be described as an actual
field survey in a journal submission.
9.4 Sampling
A proposed actual study may use purposive and snowball
sampling because students who have returned mid-course constitute a relatively
difficult-to-identify population.

The failure to find a significant visa effect in the
illustrative model does not mean visas are unimportant. It
means that, after controlling for the other variables, visa difficulty did not
make an independent statistically significant contribution in this simulated
dataset.
17. Chi-Square Analysis
To demonstrate categorical analysis, return pressure may
be classified into:

The decision to return is therefore not attributable to
one variable.
It represents the interaction:

statistical model is preferable to a single-factor explanation.
19. From Brain Drain to Brain Circulation
The return of students should not automatically be
labelled brain drain.

The distinction is important.
The Oxford International findings indicate that 81% of
surveyed Indian students intended to return to India after completing their
education, but this is an intention measure, not an observed
return rate.
A recent research study of Indian researchers also
illustrates the importance of international mobility: internationally mobile
researchers can maintain stronger international collaborations, and returnees
may act as bridges between Indian and global research networks.
Thus, the policy objective should not simply be:
"Stop Indian students from going abroad."
It should be:
"Make international mobility a two-way
knowledge and talent circulation system."
20. Why India's Research Ecosystem Matters
The mid-course-return problem is also connected
indirectly to India's domestic higher-education environment.
The EY-Parthenon analysis reports that India's R&D
expenditure is approximately 0.65% of GDP, and identifies
fragmentation, inadequate industry collaboration and infrastructure constraints
as important research-system challenges. It also reports India as fourth globally
in publication volume while highlighting weaker impact indicators such as
citations and H-index.
The implication is not that Indian higher education
lacks talent.
Rather, India has a research ecosystem problem
involving:

incentives;

training;
- industry
collaboration;
- research
administration;
- international
collaboration; and
- institutional
inequality.
The British Council's analysis of Indian higher
education has also identified challenges surrounding teaching quality, faculty
capacity and international collaboration.
Therefore, students returning from abroad should not
simply be viewed as people who "failed overseas."
They may represent a potentially valuable pool of:
- internationally
trained graduates;
- researchers;
- entrepreneurs;
- teachers;
- managers;
- professionals;
and
- global-network
holders.
21. Policy Recommendations
21.1 For Indian universities
1. Create Returnee Academic Fellowships
Universities should create one- to three-year
fellowships for Indian students returning from foreign universities.
2. Establish credit-transfer mechanisms
A student who returns for legitimate reasons should not
automatically lose all academic progress.
3. Develop international research cells
Institutions should help returnees convert overseas
exposure into:
- joint
research;
- publications;
- patents;
- consulting;
- teaching
innovation; and
- industry
projects.
4. Improve research infrastructure
Laboratories, databases, statistical software and
research-support systems should be strengthened.
5. Reduce administrative burden
Research-active faculty should receive dedicated
research time.

Foreign universities can reduce avoidable mid-course
withdrawal by providing:

than requiring every student to leave India.

family or immigration pressures emerge?

What institutional and family mechanisms exist to help
the student?

When experienced pressure exceeds perceived opportunity
and available support is inadequate, the probability of return increases.
27. Conclusion
Indian students going abroad for higher education should
not be viewed simply through the binary concepts of "brain drain" and
"successful migration."
The more complex phenomenon is mid-course return.
The available 81% survey figure must be interpreted
correctly: it refers to students' intention to return to India after completing
their education, not to an observed 81% mid-course return rate.
The present illustrative analysis of 300 observations suggests that financial
pressure, psychological stress, employment difficulty, family responsibility,
inadequate institutional support and attractive opportunities in India can be
important determinants of return pressure.
The central finding is therefore:
Mid-course return is not necessarily a failure
of international education; it is often the outcome of an imbalance between
expected opportunity, experienced pressure and available support.
India's policy objective should consequently move beyond
preventing students from going abroad.
The objective should be to create an ecosystem in which
students can:
go abroad → acquire knowledge → build networks →
return or collaborate → transfer knowledge → contribute to India.
This is the essence of brain circulation.
India's research challenge is especially relevant
because international exposure can strengthen research networks, but the
domestic ecosystem must provide sufficient infrastructure, funding,
institutional support and career opportunities for returnees. India's R&D
expenditure remains relatively low at around 0.65% of GDP according to the
EY-Parthenon analysis, while the country has substantial research output but
continuing challenges in research impact and collaboration.
The future of Indian higher education should therefore
not be measured only by how many students India sends abroad,
but also by how effectively India attracts, retains, reconnects with
and benefits from globally trained talent.
28. Limitations of the Study
- The
quantitative dataset used in this manuscript is illustrative/simulated.
- It cannot
be interpreted as evidence of actual behaviour among 300 Indian students.
- The
proposed sample is not nationally representative.
- Students
from different countries may experience substantially different visa and
employment environments.
- Mid-course
return may involve multiple simultaneous causes.
- Intention
to return cannot be treated as actual return behaviour.
- Self-reported
responses in an actual study may contain recall and social-desirability
bias.
29. Scope for Future Research
Future researchers should collect primary data from at
least 500–1,000 Indian students across major destination countries.
Longitudinal research should follow students from:
pre-departure → first semester → second semester
→ completion/withdrawal → post-return employment.
Future studies could also compare:
- UK vs
Canada;
- USA vs
Australia;
- STEM vs
management;
- undergraduate
vs postgraduate;
- male vs
female;
- scholarship
vs self-funded students;
- Tier-1 vs
Tier-2 Indian cities.
Structural equation modelling could subsequently test
whether psychological stress mediates the relationship between financial
pressure and return intention.
